Since I made it through the World’s biggest bungee jump alive, I thought I would try to give back to you all in a way that is far more personal. Though I do receive a lot of emails and comments that are questions, I thought it would be a good idea to answer all of them in one place.

RSS Subscribers:

I’ll get things started with one question I’m sure a lot of people have been wondering, and another that I have been contemplating for a while.
1) I don’t think I’ve seen this answered before, but how did you come up with the name ViperChill?
2) If you were to start a new blog from scratch with zero promotion, how long do you think it would take for you to reach the same amount of readers? I know with this one you only mentioned it in a PS on PluginID, but that’s a fairly major blog.
Good questions
Is the value of a blog reader worth more than a RSS reader.
My blog is the almost the same as yours in age, it has 2x the number of visitors here. BUT I’ve only around 400+ RSS subscribers.
Nice Glen! Just curious…How many emails do you get in a day? Also, if you were only allowed to keep one of your many web properties, which one would it be and why?
Konnichi-wa Glen,
cool that you took and survived the jump. I can’t even ride roller coasters without throwing up. But it’s always awesome to test one’s limits.
My question:
If you want to build a remarkable big blog (multi-authored in the future !), something along the lines of pro/copyblogger, what would be your 3 biggest tips ?
I see you shine your way, go on, go on
I have spend a lot of time writing creative content and will not outsource content because I want my blog to be personal. What is the most effective way you would allocate a small budge for outsourcing other than content? I have not done this and may never, but always toy with the idea of outsourcing as long as it is non-spammy and white hat, that is having a part time helper with a blog business? Maybe since content is king maybe the only way one can outsource is with content writing and if you have a niche you can find an expert to help you? What do you think?
Hi Glen,
Your blog has been very successful in a relatively short space of time. What makes your blog different to all the other internet marketing blogs out there – what’s your USP?
Allan
Awesome idea Glen! I have a few questions.
1. Do you use paid traffic for your niche sites? If so, which advertising systems and why?
2. Do you still build niche sites for Clickbank products? How much time does it take you (on average) to start making money on these sites?
3. What do you think about squeeze pages? Do you have any experience with building mailing lists?
4. Do you hire copywriters for your niche sites or write everything on your own? Could you recommend any good copywriting books/sites?
You’ll be inundated Glen
I’ve been running my blog for nearly 3 years, for 2 big reasons. 1. I love coaching and have noticed that what I do actually works for people, and 2. I just love writing and it’s a great creative outlet. I see the blog as a way to build a platform so that I can do more of these things, help more people and make a real difference. I’m not about to stop, but after 3 years I have just over 400 RSS subscribers, so it seems I’m playing something of a long game. My question is, how do you know if you’re missing a trick or doing something wrong from a technical point of view? How do I know if I’m missing a string to my WordPress/SEO bow?
Lovin’ your work Glen, holler if I can help out.
Awesome Glen,
How are you managing your time? i.e. How do you avoid the distractions and be more productive?
Thanks so much,
-Onibalusi
Also Glen,
Why are you not building a mailing list for ViperChill?
Hey man,
)
Glad you made it back alive (although sad I don’t get Viperchill now
If you couldn’t blog about internet marketing or making money online, would you still say that blogging is a good way to make money? or would it be better to invest your time into making your own products or building affiliate sites?
I like Diggy’s question.
Success in any endeavor takes a great deal of planning, effort, and follow-through, but let’s be honest, the make-money-online, web-based-business market is ripe with get-rich-quick types and people looking for silver bullets.
I keep coming back for the thoughtful, in-depth analysis of experiences and insightful commentary on concepts. It’s obvious Glen is the real deal, but I see a lot of people merely looking to build readership so they can serve up thoughtless advertisements or hawk mindless affiliate programs.
What if Digg, StumbleUpon, Facebook, Twitter, AdSense, AdWords, Chitika, and all those other deals went away? What if, the only way to make money on your site was to build relationships with actual people – readers, vendors, sponsors, partners – or to develop a product/service of your own and sell it directly?
Thanks for the opportunity, Glen.
Hi Glen,
please recommend me top 3 secret/hidden/unknown/unexploited/underrated resources on how to make money online.
Thanks in advance for the answer.
Hi Glen,
Nice idea.
I have following questions to you.
1. What would be one thing you like to go back and change about your blogging/web business?
2. What do you consider your biggest failure and success.
Hi Glen!
1) Why don’t you promote anything on this blog? No ads, no affiliate links, nothing. Is there a clever reason for that or are you just doing it for the readers and don’t need the income you could possibly earn?
2) What are your future plans with this blog and making money online in general?
3) What are the 3 best ways to make money online in your opinion? (blogging, product development, affiliate sites etc)
Thanks!
Martin
Hey Glen, just passing through showing my support. I took your advice and instead of just consuming content I’ve been actually taking action for the past few months, with phenomenal results. But on to my question:
When posting to do-follow blogs…. how useful are they for building backlinks? Does Google consider them important or is it just a waste of effort when compared to article marketing instead?
And also…
I’m sure by this point you’ve updated your list of web tools that you use to manage your online businesses and projects. What new sites and online tools (free and paid) do you use to manage things?
Thanks buddy,
Just wanted to ditto the question here about posting on do-follow blogs. Some say “it doesn’t matter” from an SEO point of view whether you comment on no-follow or do-follow blogs. (Beyond of course the other PR benefits, etc.) And if you say it DOES matter from an SEO point of view, compared to no-follow blogs, does that argue then for me to make my own blog comments do-follow? [This debate is driving me nuts!]
I would not do-follow your own blog comments.
Why would you put a dead facebook link in this post?
Works fine for me
Hi Glen,
I loved your post, “How I Really Built a Blog with 6,500 subscribers”, you gave some really great insights in it. I was just wondering if you can give a rough estimate on the number of guest posts you wrote for it?
Hi Glen,
glad you made the jump OK and the world wasn’t deprived of your knowledge (would they have let Leonardo da Vinci do a Bungee?).
My question is, what signals let you know that a niche site you have created is not going to work? When do you pull the plug on non-working sites?
Thanks
Hi Glen, what business model (or mix of business models) would you recommend to someone who has never had an online business before (no list, no blog, no followers, etc.), has no particular expertise, and who aspires to generate an average of $4000/month? Thanks for sharing your knowledge so generously.
Hi Glen. I was wondering which type of sites you find do better in terms of making money, product ones or information ones (E.G a website on microwave ovens or a site showing people how to do something)? So if you could only own one of either which would it be?
I have an idea for a new blog. I need a WP template that can incorporate a calendar function. Any good template to suggest or a good web designer that won’t cost me a fortune?
Hi Glen,
I’m launching a blog soon and I’ve been wondering if it’s a good idea to start promoting it the moment I publish the first post or if I should wait until I’ve posted more content. I’ve never followed a blog from the beginning; the blogs I usually read already had a good amount of posts when I came across them, so I could read several posts and decide if I liked the blog or not. That’s why I’m afraid that if people come to my site and find out that there are only two or three posts (moreover, I want the first one to be a kind of introduction), they won’t take it seriously. What do you think about this?
Thanks in advance!
Hi Glen, I purchased Cloud Living recently and enjoy the simple, easy-to-follow instructions you provide.
I wonder, since Cloud Living has been out for a while, is there much about the mini-site section you would change? Rather, can this system still work as-is for beginners, or have times changed enough in the past 12-18 months that require a shift in this strategy? Thanks in advance.
Cheers Glen!
When you first started out learning affiliate marketing and SEO several years ago, who were your role models and what are they up to today?
Hi Glen,
I think that this is a fantastic way for you to share even more of your wisdom and knowledge with us.
My question is about where you see yourself long-term, such as in 10-20 years from now. I ask because you started with making money using the internet at such a young age and I wonder if you see yourself still being interested and having the stamina when you’re 35 or 45 to be doing what you do now or do you see your career morphing into something internet-related, but unrecognizable in it’s current form?
You’ve spoken before of wanting to own your own nightclub, but would that idea still satisfy you 10 years from now, especially given how successful (read: money) you’ve been using the skills and connections you gained through the internet and blogosphere?
Looking forward to the answers here. Some great questions have been posted so far!
Thanks,
Karen
For a newbie that’s just starting out, what would you advice them to do 2) how do you manage your time??? 3. when it comes to promotion of blogs, what is the best way to promote a blog and do you think social bookmarking is alive???
When building niche sites, which strategy do you take? Do you try to be the authority and build a mini blog site around a specific niche and you monetize the site with ads and affiliate links within the posts, or do you build squeeze pages that just upsells a clickbank type product?
Hi Glen,
This is my first comment on your blog though I’ve been a loyal reader of viperchill for months.
These are my questions:
1) How do you monetize a video blog.
My blog badavideos.com is a video blog. Although I’ve been successful in having banner ads ( even before the official launch!), it would be great if I can get hold of other methods. (please don’t say adsense).
2) How to monetize a forum other than adsense. I’ve another blog located at badaforums.net which has an integrated high traffic forum. But the amount generated by adsense is pennies compared to the traffic.
Please spend one minute of your precious time in answering my questions.
It would be great if you could provide a definitive answers to these questions (which I know you willsince the are no proper guides elsewhere ( except for forum monetization, a!) mention in doshdosh.com). Thanks.
Hi Glen,
Newbie here. I’m working my way through the Minisite section of cloud living. I liked what you mentioned in the book about only promoting excellent products that you’d use yourself. My problem is that the affiliate/merchant product listings seem to be littered with scams; to make things worse, they all use the same marketing formats on their website of which I’m generally suspicious, so even if there is a respectable product amidst them, it’s very hard to tell. I don’t want to promote things like an ebook on how to win the lottery. Any advice on product selection (if I’ve never used any of those products before)?
Hey Glen,
I’ve been a regular readers since what… ages? Love what you to – it’s remarkable!
My Question:
You talked about cross-promoting in a small group of blogs to grow faster. Can you expand on that? Does it work cross niche?
Also how about limited niches that has only so many topics you can talk about. Once the blog is saturated, what do you do?
Hi, Glen!
Thanks for letting us ask you a question. I’ve started an endeavor with a news-based and consulting site and it’s my first time to do traffic generation for this. My only experience was my own blog which generates 1,000 pageviews++ per day mainly via FB.
My question is, aside from keyword research and SEO, what are tactics (sustainable or unsustainable) that can immediately increase uniques and pageviews for a particular site that are white-hat?
By taking a quick look at my site – TickTockTimer dot com – what smart and easy thing could I do to increase its ranking in google for the search term ‘online timer’ ? Thanks
I was going to email/tweet/FB you to ask you a couple of questions which I would have love to include in a free report of mine. Guess I’ll ask here:
Did you ever make a mistake or a move for one of your big blogs/projects (could be Viper Chill, Plugin ID, Cloud Living) that had you not pushed through, you wouldn’t be the success that you are today? What was that mistake and how did you push through it?
I have to FB you now
Hey Glen,
I’m a RSS subscriber but this is my first time commenting. I am so hooked on this site because the content is so valuable. Anyway, I wanted to know if you could address your criteria for selecting a place to guest post. For example, does the site where you guest post need to meet minimal subscriber count requirements/or Alexa ranking to generate the 100 visits/15 subscribers you average/ guest post?
What is the difference between a blog and an affiliate website? They both can be monetized, so that’s not it, I’m just trying to figure this all out, thanks!
This is great Glen, here’s mine:
Your ‘brand’ is now huge, do you ever feel overwhelmed with the pressure that comes with each post. For a young dude, I’ve always been blown away with your ‘steady’ character/nature. Not to sound corny, but do you feel the pressure behind the scenes or do you embrace your little corner of cloud living fame?
Thanks, as always, for what you do.
If you plan on selling an ebook or adding a membership program to your blog, should you ever hold back putting any of this good “meaty” information in your free daily/weekly blog posts so that it’s only available in your ebook/membership area?
I keep thinking if I teach everything on my site for free, there will be no reason for someone to pay money to read or hear more.
I was very interested in the post about the length of posts. That, and the comments that followed also touched on frequency of posting. Best I can tell, you post on an average of once a week. What do you say to those who insist that you must post daily, if not 3-4 times a week, in order to be “successful.”
Glen,
I don’t have anything business related to ask… but, I was wondering. How was the bungee jump? lol I’ll bet that was a blast!
Hi Glenn,
I’d like to know how you find the internet lifestyle – ie. scheduling your own work, working from home / cafes, and going mobile.
As with most things, I’m guessing it’s not quite as glamorous as it’s cracked up to be, but better than expected in some surprising ways.
Would you please describe the challenges and bonuses of living a mobile internet business lifestyle?
cheers
Naomi
What SEO plugin do you use on ViperChill.com?
What three books have been essential to your success?
I asked something like this on another comment too, don’t know if I ever got an answer. Anyway, 1. I would like to know more than three, 5-10 books that are really helpful both in business and personal development.
2.Where did you jump? I knew the world’s highest bungee jump is in Macau Tower, China. Anyway, I would jump too
Hi, I been reading your blog for a long time since I found a link to it from one of your guest posts. I find the information above all others that I have read. My question how do you process an idea (business) ?
Thanks for your amazing posts.
Hey thanks for the chance to ask you a question.
One issue I am having is the ability to collect leads on a large scale. My audience is into social marketing and marketing strategies but I just cannot find that hot button.
any ideas? My site is http://www.chilesadvertising.com
Thanks
Do you think friends are true friends if one of your friends says hes busy with getting stuff prepared when you asked him to give you a ride to a club that he invited you to meet up at with his friends or is he not really one?* I’m just curious as to what you thought I thought real friends stuck up for you, if not you should forget about them. *random and stupid social question
Hi there! I love your blog and way of writing, and I admire your success. I myself only want to make enough money to pay the bills at first and live independently. I’m 19 right now and looking for a first job while doing Internet Marketing as a potential future stream of income. I’ve done a 100 HubChallenge two months ago, and now I’ve setup 10 Clickbank Snipers which I’m promoting and writing content for, just to give you an idea of where I’m at.
Do you think investing a lot of time in IM is going to get me anywhere to a fulltime income (12,000 euros per year) in the next 12 months? (What should I really focus on in terms of money makers: AdSense, Clickbank, Selfhosted sites, Web 2.0′s, hundreds of sites or only a few bigger ones… Basically I’d like to have your take on how to earn enough in IM in order to be able to live on the earnings.
I know there are a lot of things you can do, including extensive guides for each method, and some prefer AdSense over affiliate marketing etc. so basically everyone can do what he wants, but I’d like to know what you think is the most secure/fastest road to making around 1000€ per month in IM when you’re starting out. I’m not looking for get-rich-quick stuff since I don’t believe that works, it’s always hard work in my experience, but I’m really struggling to get my life in shape right now and I would really like to have a method I can work on until I get to 1000€ per month knowing it’ll bring me there, and once I’ve achieved this I’ll be able to experiment more and see what potential Internet Marketing really has for me. RIght now it’s really money to survive basically, and I’m also looking for another “real-world” job, but since I’m going to move to another country next year I would really love to have IM as an earning method which isn’t dependent on where I live.
Which was the very first product(s) you promoted as an affiliate marketer?
What was your success progress (in terms of money) ?
Really appreciate the openness.
Thank you for all that you do.
I have no doubt that you are successful because you produce a superior product that people like me appreciate. Your posts are always well conceived, planned and executed. How do you come up with ideas for your posts? Do you have a strategy? If so, will you share?
What advice would you offer someone that read your ebook one year ago, has a basic understanding of what to do(along with about 16 websites that are ranked) who just quit his job and decided to go full tilt into online marketing?
I’ve just started to experiment with SEO and trying to get ranked for a keyword. I created a static page on my blog named “keyword” (a brand name medication) and have been busy link building –but have not yet ranked in the top 1000 in Google for the term. Yet a short blog post with no links I posted later on the same blog is currently ranked 26! I’d rather have the static page rank so that I can add to it over time and make it a really valuable resource page. Any thoughts? How do you decide whether to focus on ranking a blog post, a static page on the blog, or maybe a separate small mini site?
I’m a first time commenter although this is my favorite blog, so let me say thanks for all the great content!
Hey Glen,
I’ve been a reader for several months, but this is my first comment on Viperchill. I was wondering what you would recommend a beginner do in order to make money online as a side business. What is the easiest way to get started (blogging, mini-sites, website flipping, etc,)?
Thanks,
Tanvir
Hi Glen.
[[ First of all, let me say how cool I think it is that you're doing this---very generous of you! ]]
My question, as basically as I can explain it:
>> Do you know — if you registered 10 domain names, say, all related to rugby (let’s say rugbyworld.com, everythingrugby.com, purerugby.com, rugbymadeeasy.com etc. etc.) and then hosted them all on the *same* host (…with the same IP address) — and then you linked to each of your rugby sites amongst each of all of these domains (e.g. rugbyworld.com links to everythingrugby.com, and everythingrugby.com links to purerugby.com, purerugby links back to rugbyworld.com etc.) …. —–do you know if Google would pick up on the fact that all of those sites actually were hosted on the same IP, and therefore affect the ranking of them because one person owned them all, **more than** if they were all totally independent from each other?
Thanks. ((Hope that’s clear!))
Thanks again!
Dave
Recently google implemented instant search… What effect do you think this will have on SEO? Are there any techniques you have found to take advantage of this recent change?
If you were told you had to rank a website from scratch with only a few hours of work (With a new domain) what would you focus on?
What are the most effective SEO techniques in the industry today?
Hey Glen- My question: What are your top 3 ways for building relationships with established names on the web and in the blogosphere, especially when they have never heard of you before? Thanks.
This is great news. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your knowledge to your readers (not that you’re not doing that already with your posts). Here goes my questions:
1. For the sites that you monetize, how do you pick niches? Do you prefer only the ones you’re familiar with or do you go for those sure-win niches that you don’t know much about and just research about it?
2. Do you have a list of rules on how you choose good and profitable keywords to rank for?
3. For someone who’s starting from zero, has no to friends to help him/her promote the blog, practically a nobody in the blogging industry, what’s the best marketing tip that you can give?
Thanks again.
Hi Glen,
Thanks for making this opportunity available to someone like me. I hope I won’t be repeating a question that’s already been asked.
At what point in a blog’s life cycle do you introduce an E Book as link bait / subscriber bait / product launch?
Would you also be kind enough to offer some metric milestones and community engagement levels that a new blogger should pay attention to that would offer a cue to introduce an E Book digital product.
Hey Glen,
Love your site and have gleaned so much valuable information from you. I think all of my questions have already been asked so I’ll just wait eagerly for your answers.
This is a complete aside but I landed on your “Hey” page on FB. Looks like the recent changes in FB formatting got you like they did me (and so many others) and cut off your landing page image. A quick change in width to 520px will do the trick. I took a quick screenshot for your reference:
http://img.skitch.com/20101012-r8f9357wd8ekj6f2k35pbjfwdq.jpg
What’s the best book on biz/internet/marketing you’ve read and why?
Glen, a friend turned me on to you. What is the “Main” process you use to select a niche? and is it always something of personal interest to you? Thanks.
Hey Glen,
if you were to re-write the Minisite part of Cloud Living today, what would you change/advice, considered the evolution of IM ? About the template, structure/message form and in general.
Thanks so much in advance,
Linus
Hey Glenn,
Thanks so much for your ‘project’ of the last 12 months – its always nice to be a part of learning in this way.
How do you generate such StumbleUpon Traffic that I see in your monthly stats? Is this a push from friends how ‘like’ an article and then it catches more in a viral fashion? As I know Stumble Upon it is definately more grass root oriented from popularity – meaning for each article it does just give you a defined good rating…each article must be rated from scratch and yet your numbers are huge and consistent every time. Thanks
Hey Glen,
would you actually make any money with websites and blogs, if no one knew you make a lot of money with such things?
in other words: you sure you’re not just making a lot of money because you tell people so they think you’re successfull and visit your blogs even more often, which in the end leads to more money in your pockets
sorry for beeing as bold as brass in my very first post
Hi Glen Bungee Jumper Survivor
I do enjoy reading your articles, gives create inspiration and implies positive attitude. Most questions are posted already, look forward to comments. sames question as Shinta point 3.
For someone who’s starting from zero, has no to friends to help him/her promote the blog, practically a nobody in the blogging industry, what’s the best marketing tip that you can give?
thanks Glynis
