ViperChill Monthly Report 12 (The Last One Ever)

73

Well, I will be doing a report every six months or so, but this is the last one I’ll publish monthly. As of October 17th 2010, it will have officially been one year since I relaunched ViperChill. I should finish the year with just over 10,000 subscribers, which isn’t a small feat (any blogger will attest to that).

I’m going to write a post in a few days which looks over the year as a whole, but for now I want to concentrate on the traffic stats and other figures for September. Thanks to all of you who have helped the site become what it is in such a short time. I know I do all the writing, but you guys give me something worth writing for.

Overall Traffic

september-2010

  • Visits: 45,243
  • Pageviews: 74,103
  • Avg time on Site: 2 mins 22 seconds

Last month was the best traffic month ever for the site, and even with fewer posts, the site only had 3,000 less visits. The articles written in September, were:

  • Affiliate SEO: How Websites Are Ranking in The Most Profitable Industries Online
  • The Most Effective Way to Increase RSS Subscribers

Here at ViperChill there are a lot less articles published than most sites, but typically these articles are 2,000-3,000 words and cover topics in massive detail. You could say that we prefer signal over noise.

Top Referring Websites

Here are the top referring traffic sources for the month of September:

  1. Direct: 13,520
  2. StumbleUpon: 7,823
  3. Google (organic): 7,552
  4. Twitter.com: 1,332
  5. Sphinn.com: 1,322
  6. Google.com: 1,070
  7. Lifehacker.com: 793
  8. Metro.se: 757
  9. News.Ycombinator.com: 656
  10. Facebook.com: 640

Top Referring Keywords

There were a total of 7,814 visits via 1,843 keywords this month. The top 10, were:

  1. ViperChill: 1,172
  2. wordpress seo: 939
  3. viral marketing: 753
  4. social media strategy: 376
  5. viper chill: 326
  6. guest blogging: 160
  7. seo wordpress: 160
  8. “guest blogging”: 151
  9. glen allsopp: 139
  10. minimalist text editor mac: 105

While search engine traffic is still a tiny portion of the traffic that arrives at ViperChill, it is growing steadily month on month with the number of referring keywords increasing by another 25%.

Subscriber Stats

Feedburner is so erratic that I just can’t take it that seriously anymore. Despite the current flaws in the system, I will continue to report on the numbers that it gives me. Although I don’t have any goals for the size of the community here, I still think it is an interesting metric to monitor.

  • September 1st: 8,814
  • September 30th: 9,651
  • Change: +837

Despite only writing two posts, the number of subscribers has actually increased more than in many other months. It’s great to see the site continues to thrive even when I’m not as active as I could be.

If you’re reading this in a feed reader or inbox, thanks for subscribing!

Personal Update

My passport finally arrived a few days ago so my new scheduled arrival in Bangkok is around November 15th. I plan to make Thailand my home for at least 6 months and would love to meet up with any other bloggers / entrepreneurs over there. The reason I have been less active this month is mostly because I’ve been focusing most of my time on the software I’m hoping to release next week. I have the finished version so just let me say this: It is amazing!

I’ve showed it to a number of online marketers and they couldn’t wait to get their hands on it. I really think this is going to change the affiliate marketing industry. A few issues in my personal life also took up a bit of my time – I found it hard to get into the writing mood with a lot of drama going on – but I won’t get into it in detail here.

My parents arrive in South Africa on the 1st of November so it will be good to spend some time with them as I haven’t seen them for over a year. Sorry for the lack of updates, but I think my life drama is over now and I can get back on track with the software launch and bringing you guys the best content I can write.

Here’s to an awesome October!

    Glen,

Those numbers are VERY impressive! I’m only at a fraction of those and I’ve been around for about 6 months now.

    Keep it up!

      Glen,

This is outstanding. I’ve been following your blog for some time now and am very impressed by your content.

I’m trying to do the same thing over at my blog…few posts, but rich, in depth content. Signal over noise is definitely the way of the future.

It’s amazing that the site still pulls in great numbers without much content added in a month. I wonder what would happen if the site was dormant for a month?

One variant I find really intriguing is why the avg time spent on the site is somewhat low (or at least sounds like it). I would have expected a much avg time on site especially since like you said a lot of your key posts are larger in nature in the 3-4 thousand word area.

Any ideas what is driving that based on page hits?

    Hi Glen,

I’m one of the many (silent) people who read your blog as RSS subscribers and just pop up as one of those Feedburner stats.

I’d like to say that you’ve personally inspired and taught me so much. You actually reshaped the direction of my life. Add that to your CV if you wish. Might seem stupid for an SEO site to have such an influence, but it’s the actual demonstration of the 80/20 rule that really convinced me you were onto something that could get rid of some of the stress I was putting myself through.

So, from one Southern Hemisphere resident to another, I want to say thanks -a deep, heartfelt thanks.

best of luck on your Thailand sojourn. I lived there two years myself and enjoyed it immensely. But I live in the Philippines now (entering my fifth year here) and find it a much more hospitable country to Americans and a much easier place to blog from … Thailand has really hosed up their visitor visa system in recent years.

I was tempted into commenting by noticing a fellow commenter or two saying they wanted to live overseas too, but needed to wait until they were making more money.

Seems bit like the cart before the horse to me. Why not move to someplace with at least 40% lower cost of living and focus on building your business from there? Many of my friends have discovered the benefits of “economy-birding” in the Philippines … it’s great place to pay off debt and build your business online. Thailand, I am sure, will work well for you in that way too … especially if you get out of Bangkok into the ‘real’ Thailand, not the Disney world with chili peppers” tourist trap.

  • About

Hey, I'm Glen. In February 2009 I quit my full-time job and have made my living from the internet ever since. Having previously worked as the Social Media Manager for the likes of Nissan and Hewlett Packard, I took my skills and successfully applied them to my own projects. ViperChill is the place I share everything I've learned in order to help other people make a living online, and to live in the Cloud.

Unlike most people in this industry, I don't make my living online by teaching other people how to make their living online. If you would like to learn more about me, then click here.
