Why I Hit the Digg Homepage on a Daily Basis

Before I start, I just want to say that this isn’t to brag or show off, but to give some pointers on how you can start to build up some Digg accounts and enjoy getting involved in the community. In fact, as I write this I have one story on the homepage and one on the top 10 of all time.

No I’m not writing great content, I’m submitting it for others. What you have to realise about Digg, which may sound obvious is that, that’s what it’s there for. Sure, a lot of members are just there because it produces the best news on the web, but there’s a lot of ‘competition’ between some users to see who can get the most on the hompeage. One of the top 10 Digg Users even set-up a website so he can track how he is doing. I’ve been getting into Social Media a lot more of late so I thought I would share how I’m going about building some credibility on Digg.

How I Am Building Up My Digg ‘Profile’

1. Submitting Stories. This may seem obvious but you don’t just want to be submitting stories for any website. I have a folder on firefox which is called ‘DiggBait’ (no joke) and I check those sites to see if there’s anything worth submitting. This folder also includes the homepages of Reddit and Netscape where most of the stories there will make it onto the Digg Homepage.
2. Commenting. In this folder I have another Digg-specific link and that is looking at the most popular sites in the upcoming section. If they are likely to make it onto the Digg homepage then I will leave a funny comment, I normally manage to make the first or 2nd comment which allows people to start recognising my avatar and username.
3. Adding Friends. First of all I started off by adding a couple of friends a day. I started with those who were constantly making it onto the homepage then once I was getting my ‘name out’ and having stories on the homepage I knew I could stop this. You see, as soon as you start hitting the homepage, people start adding you as friends and you can just add them right back. I advise adding some people who Digg your initial submissions aswell.
4. Submit First. In order to make the Digg Homepage you have to submit the good news first, because seriously, if it’s good, somebody else probably will. I check Reddit on a daily basis as most of my submissions from there make the homepage, and I have noticed that if you check on other stories from Reddit that have hit the homepage over there then you should comment on them on Digg. This is because they are also likely to hit the homepage but if not I guess it raises your stats a little anyway.

I understand that what I have written here may be seen as boring and tedious, yet that’s not even part of it. This may sound strange but after really throwing myself into the Digg community and really being a part of it, I have realised that I really enjoy doing it and I can see why Digg is so popular. When the stories you are submitting instantly get around 20 Digg’s it may be a good time to submit your own, quality content. Currently I’m getting about 10 for every story so have a bit more work to do.
