Build links by Going slightly Off-Topic

Have you ever seen that blog that writes about making money, from blogging? Have you seen these blogs that write about making money, from blogging? Have you noticed the thousands of blogs that write about making money, from blogging?

Well I have, and it’s a shame, not only because there’s only a few sites that write unique content, but because that’s certainly not the only way to make money online.

What I’m going to discuss today is how you can attract a lot of links to your site by going slightly off-topic. For this to work though you need to be prepared to put in a lot of effort and write one mega article / blog post.

Examples

There was one blog post out there that really gave me the idea and the reason to write this, I’m sure it’s not surprising that they wrote a lot of content on a slight off-topic niche and have a lot of links.

I’m talking about a post made on the blog of Steve Pavlina, who writes about Personal development. Yet, one day Steve covered the topic of Making Money from Blog’s. According to Yahoo this has generated over 6,500 backlinks. I’m sure you would put the effort in if you thought you could get anywhere close to these results.

Why Did it work?

  • It covered everything the topic should, and was written well
  • People who blog about making money with blogs don’t want to give everything away at once. Therefore a one-stop shop stands out from the rest of the web
  • Steve is well known so it probably got recognised pretty easily

You Can Do It Too

Thing’s to make sure you do:

  • Write about something you are knowledgeable in
  • Make sure the content is good and not something that is just quickly thrown together
  • If you are going to capitalise on the fact that other people don’t want to write about everything at once, then try and do it
  • Aim to create content for a popular niche, making money online is a very popular topic and can get a lot of attention

Thing’s to look out for:

  • Off-Topic content can mean off-topic links. I do believe it will still raise your domain popularity overall
  • Your regular readers might be put off by your change of content so try to add some relevance
  • It’s pointless wasting time doing it if you aren’t going to give it your all and make it exceptional
  • Once it’s written, get out there and promote it, otherwise nobody might know about it. If nobody knows about it then nobody can link too it!

I love the statement “You get out what you put in”. You could probably take some shortcuts with this option but it’s really not worth it. If you are going to do it, do it properly!

What about ‘you get what you give’? Rolls off the tongue nicer, I think!

haha good option. As long as the point is understood then I’m happy. Thanks for stopping by Joshua

It really works. My best linked post on my SEO 2.0 blog is about Iran. I just wrote my honest opinion about the anti-Iran media frenzy and people in Iran responded overwhelmingly. I garnered so many links from the Persian blogosphere that I rank in the top 10 for “love” in Persian.

Basically it wasn’t link bait or something, it was just to express my grwoing frustration with the warmongers strategy to depict Iran as a rogue state to prepare a military strike against the country.

Interesting information Tad, congrats on the success

interesting,…sounds like a great way to get exposure to different crowds. good post.

certainly is shaun. For e.g. it’s unlikely you will share your money making secrets all at once!

[...] future, it’s possibly an opportunity for somebody to use to go into more detail to build some off-topic links, but I think Marketing Pilgrim did that pretty [...]

i agree with you Glen. That really works. And some times a few percentage of people reading there and finding our links may be some times of our own category. who ever know if i put my martial art blogs link here - http://www.worldofmartialart.com/martial_arts_blog (am not putting it as a link) and You are interested in martial artist and become a visitor in my blog and a member in my forum… That’s the thing.

Thanks
