6 Features I’d Like to See at Mixx

It’s clear that Mixx is way ahead of it’s competitors like Digg in terms of support, I even prefer some of the features…and to stop me from contacting them and driving them crazy, I thought I would outline some features that I would like to see and encourage others to add there’s in the comments below. Hopefully this is something the Mixx dev team will look over and keep a copy of when they want to look into what to add next.

I’ve been using mixx a lot lately, have been frontpaged around 7 times and have a few awards on my profile page (a very nice touch I think).

So, here’s some of the things I would like to see:

1. Friends Submissions on my Home Page

I’m not sure why this isn’t included but I’m sure it wouldn’t be too difficult for them to add this with all the ‘Add to Your Mixx’ buttons around the site. I often check my friends submissions before the popular page and it would take away a click to give my my ideal blend of the web.

2. Shared Links on the Site

When I first joined Mixx, I added a few friends then barely used it. Then a few days later I noticed over 100 emails in my inbox from people sharing links, something I instantly turned off. I’ve only shared a link with my friends once and would prefer to have other shares from friends on the site rather than flooding my inbox.

3. The Ability to Search between Content Types

I’m sure this one is in the works but it’s something I would love to see so thought I should add it here. Basically the current search option in mixx just shows all content types mixxed (pun intended) together, it would be great to be able to search between images and videos; a feature I’m sure the community would enjoy.

4. Improve the Awards System

I really like the Mixx lounge, it encourages people not only to submit great stories but awards people for commenting, voting and sharing content whereas on the likes of Digg only the Top Submitters are given any sort of off-site recognition. Whilst I do like the current awards, they only show on the profile for 48 hours, I’m pleased to announce this is being worked on so I look forward to seeing what they come up with.

5. Dynamic Mixx Button

Reddit and Digg both have these and it’s something I think would help grow Mixx even further. Although I wouldn’t necessarily add the buttons to this site, I’m sure a lot of people would and if it helps grow the traffic and community on the site then I’m all for it. I’m not sure how they are going to stop this from getting abused though and it’s something that Digg struggled with early on although they seem to be getting it pretty ‘right’ at the moment, I hope an answer to this is available before this idea becomes a reality.

6. Threaded Commenting

I know the comments system is getting an overhaul over at Mixx I’m just not sure what they have in mind. The option to reply to someone under their comment (similar to embedding) instead of using the current @username would be much better in my opinion and let conversations flow within the comments; sort of like the comment system on this blog. It’s one of the areas I think Mixx is lacking in that a lot of popular stories still don’t get any comments so any changes to this would be very beneficial.

Glen,

I completely agree with the on-site notification update.
I also turned off all of my updates coming into my email but I wouldn’t mind voting on shared links, joining new groups, viewing comments on my links, all from my homepage.

I feel that people would utilize the site more if there were more on site activities like this. Nobody likes too much email from these sites.

Great list. I feel that the site would be much more productive if we could see these changes.

right on, I agree with on-site shared links and friend submissions on the home page… to be honest, im getting very sick of getting at least 30+ emails per day just from Mixx, add on that Digg shouts and notifications from other networks. The other day I saw on MyBlogLog stat page that some visitors were coming from Mixx on one of the posts so obviously that post is on Mixx but I coldn’t find it anywhere so search facility would really be nice…

so, is this the post you are submitting to my project or another one? :)

Which project would that be?

Ignore that, didn’t realise it was your site

I have brought up threaded comments to the mixx team before. I believe it is on their roadmap, but I have not heard any definitive details.

I like Mixx but I also think they have a long way to go. I’m with you on the emails. Tonight I had to stop email notifications because it was about 75 a day. It will be interesting to see if that will die off like the shouts on Digg. I think the number of shouts I get is probably about 20% of what it was when they 1st implemented that feature.

I turned it off yesterday as well, got far too much. I’m not so sure it will die down for a while though…

As for 1) - you can ad your friends to your homepage manually.

Yep, but not all their submissions at once, you have to add each individual friend

noo not number 6
